15 stars & 15 Stripes replica flag, 1912-1914.
This flag is a small wool replica modeled after the flag that flew over Fort McHenry in Baltimore Harbor during the naval portion of the Battle of Baltimore during the War of 1812. The flag was specially made for the National-Star Spangled Banner Centennial Commemorative Celebrations held between 1912 and 1914. While these celebrations became a tradition in Baltimore since the first anniversary remembrance in 1815, many other communities both in the United States and Canada elevated these celebrations during the 1912-1914 period, some communities even held local celebrations and raised grand monuments. From September 6th to the 13th, 1914, Maryland and Baltimore hosted the first week-long National Star-Spangled Banner Centennial Celebration.
This replica is not an exact copy of the Star Spangled Banner flag whose stars point alternately towards the hoist and fly but has stars that have one point up. The original 30 x 42 foot flag from which this replica was modeled after was made by Mary Young Pickersgill and during the War of 1812 it flew over Fort McHenry inspiring Francis Scott Key to write the poem that became in 1931 the official US National Anthem - The Star-Spangled Banner. The original Mary Pickersgill's flag still exists and presently hangs at the Smithsonian Institution's, National Museum of American History.
After the centennial celebration a Baltimore family retained this 15 stars & 15 Stripes flag replica as a keepsake until 1984 when it was donated to The Flag House & Star-Spangled Banner Museum. At the museum it was framed and preserved as a noteworthy relic from the National Star-Spangled Banner Centennial Celebration.
Americans have always utilized historical reproductions of the Stars & Stripes, but reproductions of either the Star Spangled Banner or the 15 Star - 15 Stripe flag are less common.
