Liberian National Flag.

Sub-collection: U.S. Army Ranger museum

National Flag of Liberia.
This cotton Liberian flag is associated with the First Gulf War and Operation Desert Storm of August 1990. During Operation Desert Shield, which was the build up to Operation Desert Storm during the Gulf War to liberate Kuwait from Iraqi occupation, elements of the United States Marine Corps (USMC) were diverted to the African nation of Liberia.

While the world's attention was on the Persian Gulf, units of the USMC (United States Marine Corps), demonstrating its mobility and flexibility, were diverted to Monrovia, Liberia, for Operation Sharp Edge, the evacuation of US citizens from that nation's war-torn capital. After rescuing US, Liberian, Italian, Canadian and French citizens, Company H, 2nd Battalion, 4th Marines, "The Magnificent Bastards," resumed their deployment to the Persian Gulf. During Operation Sharp Edge, the 4th Marines acquired this flag, which was subsequently donated to the US Army Ranger Museum in NYC. This is truly a unique flag from Operation Desert Storm.

Provenance: Acquired by the Zaricor Flag Collection in 1997 from the U.S. Army Ranger Museum Collection of New York City.
