Print of Philadelphia Centennial Exposition on Banner, 1876.
Philadelphia Centennial Exposition, 1876 - The focus of the national centennial celebrations in 1876 was Exhibition Hall in Philadelphia, featured in this printed scarf. That building drew extensive displays and viewers from across the country and even from foreign lands. To recall the days of the Revolution, the flag shown here has 13 stars and 13 stripes although that design was created in 1777 not 1776. The eagle holding the shield is also an historical anomaly. Those design elements are derived from the Great Seal of the United States which was not adopted by Congress until 1782. This was a popular souvenir item and was available in another version with a red border.
Drawing of Exhibition Hall with eagle holding a shield with American flag (13 stars, 13 stripes) + Text : "E PLURIBUS UNUM". Framed (outside dimensions 23.5 x 27.5).

Second Presidio Exhibit, 2003 - GALLERY V (ZFC0268) United States Centennial Commemorative Banner Date: 1876 Medium: Printed cotton Comment: This was undoubtedly an item produced in quantity by an enterprising business hoping to capitalize on the enthusiasm Americans generated for their national Centennial in 1876. There certainly was much to be proud of that year. For example, the country had recently survived a civil war that threatened its very existence, had talked the French into withdrawing their troops from Mexico, and had created the worlds first transcontinental railroad. The focus of the national celebrations in 1876 was Exhibition Hall in Philadelphia, featured in this print.
