U.S. 35 Star flag.

Sub-collection: U.S. 35 Star Flags

U.S. 35 Star flag.
The wool bunting machine-stitched field of this named flag is composed of 13 horizontal alternating red and white stripes, the 35 stars are in a seven by five rectilinear pattern. The flag is marked 6 X 10 on the hoist and finished on the heading with three brass grommets. All features seen on flags made late in the American Civil War.

The flag is marked with the inscription "R. Ingersoll" which is thought to be a reference to Royal Ingersol, a midshipman at the United States Naval Academy during the American Civil War. It was a common 19th century practice for owners of flags to inscribe their names on the heading of flags as in this example.

Royal Rodney Ingersol graduated from the USNA in 1868 and had a distinguished naval career. He was the father of Royal Eason Ingersoll; a naval officer, who attained the grade of Admiral and rose to become the Commander-In-Chief of the U.S. Atlantic Fleet in WWII.

Provenance: Acquired at auction in 1998 from C. Wesley Cowan, Cincinnati, OH.
