U.S. 38 Star Flag Colorado's admission to the Union - Double ring Star Pattern.
This large, wool, 38-star, double ring flag was made by Jabez Loane, a manufacturer of tents, awnings and flags. Several distinct physical elements of this flag attribute the Loane brothers as the creators. This particular example is similar in design to a surviving specimen found in the Loane Brothers office in Baltimore Maryland.
Loane was an active flag maker in Baltimore from the time of the Civil War through the turn of the century. Several other flags within the collection share the basic star arrangement and have been attributed to the Loane brothers (See ZFC0023 and ZFC3086 for 35-star examples; see ZFC0020 for a 38-star flag example). Loane identified the flags he sold by a code number that referred to its size. This flag has been marked with 'No. 10' inked onto the heading. This refers to a flag that is 4.5' on its hoist by 7' on its fly. Loane arranged the thirty-eight stars in the canton into two concentric rings around the center star. Thirteen stars occupy the inner ring and twenty on the outer ring. There are four additional stars on each corner of the canton.
38-star U.S. flags were adopted as the new standard after Colorado was admitted as a state in 1876.
