This Hungarian flag dates from after the Hungarian Revolution of 1956.
The Hungarian People's Republic used a horizontal tri-band of red, white and green defaced with the Hungarian communist-style arms. After the 1956 Revolution, these arms were removed from the national flags, making Hungary the only Soviet satellite and Warsaw Pact nation to utilize its pre-communist national flag during the Cold War.
The Hungarian tri-color, in its modern form, dates from the Revolutions of 1848, and was inspired by the French tricolor. The colors, however, have had a long association with the Hungarian people, dating to the 9th century. The red is said to symbolize strength, the white faithfulness, and the green, hope. They first became associated with the Hungarian monarchy in 1608, when it was adopted by King Matthias.
