U.S. 36 Star Flag, Nevada 1865.

Sub-collection: U.S. 36 Star Flags

U.S. 36 Star Flag.
This worsted wool, machine sewn, 36 Star U.S. flag has an unusual canton. The most common pattern for 36 star flags is rectilinear six by six; however, the horizontal rows of hand sewn stars on this flag are arranged 7-7-8-7-7, a star pattern less frequently seen. The flag is finished with a canvas header and grommets, a feature commonly seen on flags produced late in the American Civil War.

At some time during the flags life the flag was torn. The "L" shaped tear was repaired with a piece of blue fabric with small white polka-dots. Repairs like this often indicate that this flag was very important to some person or family.

Provenance: Acquired at auction in 1997 from C. Wesley Cowan, Cincinnati, OH.
