Hungary Peoples Republic Propaganda Flag.

Sub-collection: Europe

Hungary Peoples Republic Cold War era Propaganda & Morale Flag.
This is an Award Flag of the Hungarian Peoples' Republic to a trade union in recognition of outstanding productivity during a five-year plan. The socialist nations of the Warsaw Pact emulated the Five Year initiated in the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) in 1927 to implement the communist Theory of Productive Forces.

A Five Year Plan was a nationally planned centralized economic strategy that considered all aspects of a socialist economy such as agriculture, distribution systems, health, education, heavy industry, military needs, consumer goods and social welfare. Each plan was different, focusing on a specific goal for specific area of the state's needs.

These plans often caused tremendous upheaval, as each collective farm or production facility would have large billboards detailing the expected output of the workers towards pre-established quotas. Compliance and productivity were rewarded. Deviant or adaptive thinking or behavior and missing established goals were rewarded with humiliation. Failure to meet quotas or to follow pre-established plans could lead to imprisonment or worse.

The Prime Minister of the People's Republic of Hungary awarded this flag in 1976 to the President of the Workers National Trade Union for completing The Fourth Five Year Plan with superior results in socialist achievement.

The banner is typical of other banners presented for propaganda and morale-building throughout the communist bloc nations. See ZFC0990, ZFC3076, and ZFC3369 for other similar flags. The obverse of the flag bears the socialist arms of the Hungarian People's Republic, which were removed from the national flag after the 1958 Hungarian Revolution.

The Hungarian inscription on the flag's obverse roughly translates as: "In recognition that the 5 year plan was fully completed with superior results, The president of the Worker's National trade unions the Prime Minister of the People's Republic of Hungary;" while the reverse reads, "Labor is our homeland's glory and honor!"
