U.S. 35 Star Double Ring Flag - Jabez Loane.

Sub-collection: U.S. 35 Star Flags

U.S. 35 Star Double Ring Flag - Jabez Loane.
This large, wool, 35 star, double ring flag is attributed to the Baltimore maker of tents, awnings and flags, Jabez Loane. It is rare when an actual manufacturer of flags can be identified, but this flag is similar in design to a surviving specimen in the Loane Brothers office in Baltimore Maryland.

The distinctive double ring pattern with a center and four accent stars can be attributed to Loane. This Maryland flag maker remained in the flag business until just before the First World War. For other examples of a 35 star flag see, ZFC0023, and for 38 star versions see ZFC0019 and ZFC0020.

The flag shown resembles a number of flags which can be identified from photographs as having been flown on the locomotive that drew the funeral carriage for President Lincoln. Hundreds of thousands of mourners saw these flags as the train proceeded from Washington to Springfield, Illinois, the president's burial site. There are existing photos of the train on page 389 of "The Civil War," by Geoffrey C. Ward, with Ric Burns and Ken Burns.

The distinctive star pattern attributed to Loane is a double ring pattern with one star in the center and one star in each corner of the canton.

Provenance: Acquired at auction in 2008 from Cowan's Auctions, Cincinnati, Ohio.
