Automobile Flag President Ronald W. Reagan.

Sub-collection: U.S. Presidential

This is an automobile flag from the administration of President Ronald W. Reagan.
This is an excellent example of a fringed automobile flag from the administration of President Ronald W. Reagan.

President Reagan traveled extensively and made wide use of automobile flags. During his administration the size of automobile flags was reduced from the official 18" x 26" to a more modest 12" x 18", as in this example.
Annin & Co. made many of these flags for the administration, they screen dyed the flags, based on artwork and paintings supplied by the U.S. Institute of Heraldry.

Flags like this were supplied in both double faced and single faced versions. The double-faced flags were two flags sewn back-to-back so as to read correctly from both sides while the single faced flags, like this one, were the more traditional single thickness throughout. Surviving examples of these flags reveal that they were supplied both fringed and unfringed.

Presidential automobile car flags have been used since the administration of President Woodrow Wilson who used them in France when he attended the Versailles Peace Conference. Flags can be considered both ceremonial flags and hence fringed; or outdoor flags without fringe. Based upon surviving examples both fringed and unfringed Presidential automobile flags were and have been made up through the administration of Ronald W. Reagan.

This U.S. Presidential automobile flag was formerly part of the Presidential flag collection of the noted presidential scholar Dr. Harold Lubick. The Harold Lubick Collection of United States Command Authority flags were assembled from a variety of sources over a thirty-year period of collecting. The collection attempts to present an example of each of the major types of regulation flags and colors displayed by all flag officers; civilian and military, utilized by the command authority of the United States.
