US // Military Swagger stick / WWI

A swagger stick evolved from the riding crop, and is a hand-held "pointer" carried by military personnel. This swagger stick is tipped with a silver point, and a bell crown top defaced with a stylized US shield.

They have a long history of use. Originally in the Roman Legions, they were just practical, and way to augment pointing or gesturing. They could also be used to administer punishment by centurions.
In WWI they were carried by British officers as a symbol of rank. This practice was quickly mimicked by U.S. officers as in this example.
They are not proscribed, but have generally fallen out of favor in the modern military.
