U.S. 48-Star Parade Flag - Major General Charles Martin Gettys.

This 48-star, embroidered and sewn fringed, rayon United States parade flag from the Defense Department was famously used by none other than Major General Charles Martin Gettys from 1966-1969 during which time he served at the Pentagon as Deputy Director of Operations and Deputy Special Assistant for Strategic Mobility.

General Gettys was a career army officer who served in World War II in company and field grade positions. He received his first general's star in 1965 and served as the Deputy Director of Operations to the Joint Chiefs of Staff and later the Deputy Special Assistant for Strategic Mobility. From 1968-1969 he commanded the Americal (23rd Infantry Division) in Vietnam. During his command he recognized the abilities of, and rapidly promoted Major Colin Powell, later the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
After his service in Vietnam, he became the Director of Individual Training for the US Army before returning to Vietnam as the Chief of Staff in Vietnam to Gen. Westmorland. Before retiring he commanded the US Army in Alaska between 1971 and 1973.
