Flag page from "Cram's Unrivaled Family Atlas of the World".
This lithographed plate is taken from "Cram's Unrivaled Family Atlas of the World". Originally page 6 of that atlas, the page depicts 39 different flags and ensigns from the major nations of the world. The United States flag on the page bears only 30 stars, instead of the 38 that were official in 1883.
Additionally, the eagle in the stylized U.S. arms under the flag bears a striking resemblance to a similar image on the frontispiece of "Blacks General Atlas" (See ZFC3428).
In the world of 19th century publishing it would seem that "borrowing" images from other works was the accepted practice.
Provenance: Acquired in 2008 by purchase.
