Comment: This is the most common star arrangement encountered on the flags made from 1891 to 1896 to represent Wyomings admission into the Union as the forty-fourth state on July 10th, 1891. The stars are aligned in six horizontal rows, with the upper and lower rows each containing eight stars and the middle four rows each having seven stars. One other forty-four star pattern was popular during the last years of the four to five years when the forty-four star flag was official. This flag incorporate staggered horizontal rows, but it is evident that the maker of that pattern was anticipating the admission of Utah as the forty-fifth state, as a gap in the pattern is clearly evident in the arrangement, that was conveniently filled when the forty-five star flag became official.
