"A Collection of the Principal Flags of the Nations of the World".
This monograph, "A Collection of the Principal Flags of the Nations of the World, From the Best Authorities," illustrates 238 different flags on 16 hand-colored plates. Among the illustrations is an image of the 15 stripe United States Flag with only 12 six pointed stars.
It was inserted as a hand-colored, supplementary work in the 1813 edition of "A Complete and Universal Dictionary of the English Language," by James Barclay and published by C. Brightly and E. Kinnersley as Brightly & Childes. The author or compiler of the flag insert is unknown, but the engraver of the dictionary was J. Barlow, and he may have done the flag plates as well.
Provenance: Acquired by purchase.
