USS Arizona passing Diamond Head - 11/28/41

Sub-collection: USS Arizona - Pearl Harbor Flags

"Arizona" by Tom Freeman - The Arizona Passing Diamond Head
This limited edition print depicts two of the ships associated with significant World War II flags in the Zaricor Flag Collection: a 48 star ensign form the USS Arizona (ZFC3841) and a 48 star jack from the USS Phelps (ZFC1083).

The Arizona (ensign is one of only three known flags recovered from the Arizona after the Japanese "sneak attack" on Pearl Harbor which resulted in the destruction and sinking of that vessel. The jack of the USS Phelps is the first U.S. flag hoisted over Japanese territory in WWII.

This image captures the image of these two ships, a majestic battleship and her diminutive escort as the Arizona sets to sea for what was to be her last mission.

The promotional material accompanying the print explains;

"U.S.S. Arizona ( passes Diamond Head on November 28, 1941. U.S.S. Phelps (DD-360) is the escort.
The ARIZONA had been in a minor collision with the battleship OKLAHOMA during fleet formation training at dusk on October 22, 1941. Upon returning tio Pearl Harbor, the battleship entered Dry Dock No. 1 to check for any serious damage. The ship was already scheduled for a period of routine overhaul which lasted from October 27 until November 12, 1941. The ARIZONA departed Dry Dock No. 1 on November 12 and berthed at Bravo 2. On the 13th of November, the ARIZONA departed to sea for a period which included firing practice with the other units of Battleship Division One (BATDIVONE).
On November 28, BATDIVONE stands out to sea for the last time under what is now a troubling time for peace. The war clouds have become very dark on the rim of the Pacific. The Battleship Division remains in the Hawaiian Operation Area for a week of drills, flight operations and sailing in fleet formation.
On December 5, ARIZONA berths at F-7 quays, the NEVADA moors at F-8 quays and the repair ship VESTAL moors alongside ARIZONA all by 1200 hours. In less than 48 hours, the aircraft of the Japanese carrier strike force will arrive in Hawaii and thrust the United States into war."*
