USSR / Soviet Navy Command Flag / Group Commander

Sub-collection: Russia / USSR

Introduced in 1950 and used until 1992, all Soviet Navy command flags followed the same general pattern of a red background with the Soviet Naval Ensign in canton. The field was defaced with three, two or one white five point stars, one point up. The number of stars indicated, unlike most Western navies, not the actual grade of the commander, but rather the size of the force he commanded.

(U.S.S.R. NAVY GROUP COMMANDERS FLAG. SOVIET NAVAL FLAG RELEASED AFTER COLLAPSE OF SOVIET UNION (1992) TO THE SURPLUS STORE. RED FIELD WITH ONE WHITE STAR POINTING UP.)
