Germany - Bavarian Institutional Banner, 1909.

Sub-collection: German

Bavarian Institutional Banner, 1909.
This flag/banner was originally designed to be attached to a staff or to be an ornate extension of a finial and it has three ties that can be seen on the hoist along with five rings that appear across the upper fly edge.

The flag is divided diagonally, with white appearing in the upper fly and red in the lower. Centered on the field are two arms and the hoist arms are white and feature a knight standing in full armor while he crosses a stream or a river. The shield on the fly depicts three stylized hats or helms. The shields are touching and surmounted by a grey mural crown. The whole insignia is surrounded by a wreath of stylized olives and oaks.

The reverse side is almost the same but it also features an inscription written in German as well as the date 1909: "Schwerinritterbund gewidmet den Burgfrauen und Burgfräulein AD 1909" .

The ornate finial has an extension that bears a lion that is standing to support the Bavarian arms and the top ornament is a knight who stands in head-to-toe armor.

From the Louise Veninga Collection.
