Legally there was no 42 star United States flag. Between November 2nd and 11th 1889, the states of North and South Dakota, Montana, and Washington were added to the Union. In anticipation of the these four states' stars inclusion in the U.S. flag to become official on 4 July 1890 in accordance with the Third Flag Act, many manufacturers produced 42 star U.S. flags. However, on 3 July 1890, Idaho became the 43rd state, and technically on 4 July 1890, the 43 star flag, not the 42 star flag became official.

Thirteen alternating horizontal red and white stripes, commencing and ending with red, on a field of press dyed cotton. The 8.25 inches x 8.5 inches union/canton bears forty-two stars, each 1.25 inches across, printed on the obverse and reverse sides, in six horizontal rows of seven stars each.
