Like navies around the world, the Soviet Union (USSR) had distinctive rank flags for its officers. This particular flag was hoisted by the commander of a unit of ships on his own vessel. The canton design is the Soviet war ensign (see collection item ZFC1106). The red field expresses the revolutionary Communist commitment supposedly characterizing the fleet, while the white star indicates the rank of the officer entitled to display this design.
This flag design was in use from 1935 until 1992. The text on the hoist reads "GOST [government] 8498-8F 1984." See also collection item ZFC1110.
