National Flag of the Republic of Turkey.
This small, woolen Turkish national flag is a flag that as used for all purposes - domestic and abroad.
The origins of the Turkish flag can be traced to the collapse of the Ottoman Empire (for Ottoman variants see ZFC1570, ZFC3635, ZFC3675 and ZFC0209) when the various interpretations of the crescent and star were mutable. The use of the crescent and star are ubiquitous Muslim symbols and eventually came to be associated with the City of Constantinople and by extension, with modern Turkey.
The design was standardized into this present form in the 1920s after the establishment of the Republic of Turkey.
Turkey, just like its neighbor Greece, successfully joined NATO on 18 February 1952. Turkey is a secular state and it was the first ever Muslim nation to join NATO. As longtime adversaries of the Greeks, Turkey stands as a telling tribute to the success of NATO over the past 50 years, demonstrating that the bond between allies can remain strong and that NATO is an agent that encourages nothing but positive change.
Provenance: Acquired by purchase in Germany.
