Sub-collection: U.S. 13 Star Flags

United States // 13 Star -Commemorative -Military
Wool/bunting, machine stitched, field composed of thirteen alternating horizontal red and white stripes, commencing and ending with red, all three exterior sides edged with a 1.5 inch gold/yellow twisted cotton fringe. Inset into the upper, hoist corner and extending through seven stripes is a dark blue wool/bunting union/canton 26 inches w. x 26.5 inches h., formed from two pieces of bunting joined horizontally and bearing 13 white cotton, 5-pointed stars, each 3.25 inches across, sewn on obverse and reverse sides in 4-5-4 early star pattern. The flag is finished on its staff edge with a 1.5" cotton canvas heading flag that bears a brass grommet at each end.

The application of the fringe to this flag suggests that the flag is military; however, although this star pattern was used by the US Navy for small "boat flags" from 1854 through 1862, the brightness of the brass grommets suggest that it dates closer to the U.S. Centennial Observance of 1876 and possibly as late as the Colombian Exposition of 1893. All dates are speculative and await further investigation.
