Swiss Army Battallion style Flag -

Sub-collection: Military / Other Countries

Text hand written on hoist : "To Ben Z. 26.07.2001 Stefano Airoldi Swiss Army Battalion Flag"
Text on tag stitched to hoist : "Superflag Fahnen Keller 4562 Biberist Tel. 032/671 11..." Circa 2000

The field of this flag is stylized flames, red and white, bearing stylized Swiss "arms". Flamed flags have a long tradition in Switzerland. The wavy flames radiating from the center originated in the 16th century. They usually come in two or three colors. Although this flag complies with know known Swiss military unit it is of the general style of historic military colors.

These flags were mainly used by Swiss mercenary troops. Here the colors of the commander of a regiment (usually a Swiss noble) were arranged in such flames. The last (and only) mercenary regiment still in service is the Swiss Guard in Vatican.
