Germany // 3rd Reich Party & National Flag

Little is known about the banner. This flag was acquired in Moss Landing, California, at an Army surplus store in the early 1980's; it is thought to have been a GI bringback.

The National-Socialist German Workers' Party (NSDAP), better known as the Nazis, used a red flag with a black swastika on a central white disk. Over the years, however, there were many adaptations of the basic design. Special organizations had distinctive versions and the circumstances of display also sometimes called for modifications.

This flag appears from its extreme length-to-width ratio to have been used in a vertical format. Absence of the swastika on the reverse suggests display in a situation where one side would not normally have been visible. Since German flag makers of that era rarely were careless in their work, the details were probably intentional.

The single tassel attached at one corner needs research, especially since a vertically-hung flag would probably have had two tassels at the top edge. In addition the white disk is smaller than regulation size, relative to the width of the red background.
