Written on plaque : "Civil War" Irish Brigade Flag - Sons of Erin. Framed
These "Erin Go Bragh" flags were derived from flags carried by the Union Army's Irish Brigade and other similar Irish units which served in the Union Army during the American Civil War.
They are based on design elements found on Irish flags, but not together. However, the harp, shamrock wreath and slogan were commonly combined by Irishmen in the US.
While derived from American Civil War flags, these were made for the post war civilian market for use in St. Patrick's Day parades.
This piece dates from the 1880-1920 period.
From the Louise Veninga Collection.
