Patriotic Framed Photograph of U.S. Doughboys, WWI.
This is a First World War era photograph of two US Doughboys in patriotic frame decorated flags and military motifs. It is inscribed on the reverse "Taken in Cour-Cheverny Bois, Oct 1918, E. H. Durocher & Vernon Davis of Lynchburg VA, USA."
This is likely a reference to the Chateau de Cheverny, located in the Loire Valley. The chateau was opened to the public as a tourist attraction by the Marquis de Vibraye in 1914, just before the start of WWI.
The chateau was located near a WWI hospital at Château de Chenonceau also in the Loire Valley, and it is likely that these two soldiers were either convalescing or visiting a wounded comrade when they had their photograph taken on October of 1918.
Provenance: Acquired at Internet auction 1999.
