United States // 13 Star /W. Stokes Kirk Flag
Americans have always utilized 13 star flags; both officially as US Navy Boat Flags and unofficially, "patriotic" expressions of the original 13 United States. This practice reached its zenith in the 19th century, especially during the centennial celebrations of 1876; and again in the 20th for bicentennial observances.
Special note should be made of both the hand whipped eyelets and the disorientation of the stars in the star field which suggests an 1860 to 1876 date for this flag.
Located by Howie Madaus this is a noteworthy ex-W. Stokes Kirk flag. They were one of the largest military surplus dealers of American Civil war military and naval equipment; however, this was not simply an item from the company, but rather the W. Stokes Kirk flag for family use.
This flag was acquired from Linnie A. Kirk Mosler, a descendant who related that this treasured flag was hung inside the store in Philadelphia, and flown outside on commemorative holidays.
It is a typical a mid-19th century hand sewn, whipped eyelet, wool 13 star flag.
