United States // 13 Stars / Centennial Patriotic Flag
The previous history of this, circa 1876, Noteworthy 13 star flag is unknown, but it was part of the acclaimed collection of Superior Court Judge John T. Ball, of Santa Clara County, California. Because of the legal constraints imposed upon courtroom decor, Judge Ball used his collection to decorate the walls of his courtroom there being no restrictions on the display of the U.S. flag.
Americans have always utilized 13 star flags; both officially as colors for small boats and unofficially, "patriotic" expressions of the original 13 United States. This practice reached its zenith in the 19th century during the centennial celebrations in 1876. Thousands of 13 star flags were made both commercially and by private citizens to commemorate the centenary of the nation. This small flag is an example of such a home-made, patriotic flag.
