U.S. 34-Star Flag.
This machine and hand sewn, wool, 34-star United States flag with double appliqué cotton stars has an interesting canton. At first glance the stars appear to be in a rectilinear arrangement of 5-6-6-6-6-5 horizontal rows. However, the slight curve to the outer canton stars gives the distinct appearance of a large single ring oval encircling 16 center stars.

This flag is likely vernacular, made privately instead of commercially and was likely made between 1861 and 1863 when some of the fiercest battles of the American Civil War were fought.
