Comments on Stars | The Flag was examined by a Chemist in the Canton where the stars appear and it was found that the material was exposed to a chemical likely a fire retardant that was applied to the top of the bundle of flags that contained about 50 to 60 small flags as souvenir hand outs by the astronauts upon returning home from a mission.. Only the first six or seven flags at the top of the bundle.were affected by the retardant when it was applied to the top of the bundle. This protocol among many others was developed for all man missions after the Apollo One accident had the fire inside the command section of the capsule was devastated by fire resulting in the loss of the three man crew in a ground training exercise in 1966. . |
