"Johnson's New Chart of National Emblems", 1863.
This color lithographic chart depicts several interesting flags, among them the 35 star U.S. Flag, the Russian American Company flag and the flag of the "Confederate States of America (so-called)". The 1863 printing completed in New York at the height of the American Civil War was one of the few American charts that depicted the flag of the Confederate States of America.
Note the "so called" qualifier appended after the Confederate flag. This was the publisher's attempt to prevent an acquisition of either sympathy or sedition. It also demonstrates the uncertain outcome of the war in the public mind in 1863; especially in New York City where the depredations caused by Confederate commerce raiders were forefront in the news.
Provenance: Acquired in 2008 by purchase.
