"Johnson's New Chart of National Emblems", 1868.
"Johnson's New Chart of National Emblems", New York, Published by Johnson and Ward, 1868. This color lithograph is similar to the 1863 edition (ZFC3471), except that the United States now has 37 stars, the Confederacy has been replaced by Society Islands (Tahiti) and the American Broad Pennant depicted identifies the striped variant used only between 1869 and 1876. (See ZFC3543 for an example.)

Publishing flag charts in a rapidly changing world is a difficult proposition; the charts are hard to keep current and the changes could leave a publisher with obsolete inventory. This chart, when compared with its predecessor, illustrates this point. Never-the-less they are a colorful moment frozen in time

Provenance: Acquired in 2008 by purchase.
