Exhibition Copy | (ZFC0619) MORAGA ROOM FLAG - 2003 Special Memorial Day Display Suspended from ceiling of Moraga Room. Presidio of San Francisco's Officers Club Memorial Day 2003 37-Star United States Flag with Equal Taxation Motto Date: 1868 (official on 4 July 1867 subsequent to Nebraskas admission to statehood on 1 March 1837) Comment: This large flag bears thirty-seven stars, set in two concentric rings and a partial third ring. Though a very large flag (but not nearly as large as the original Star-Spangled Banner) this flag was evidently intended to be hung vertically from an arch or from an atrium or the wall of a building. Written on the canvas heading of the flag in large letters is the motto EQUAL TAXATION. This motto, reflecting one of the planks of the Democratic Party in the 1868 presidential election, had also been utilized two decades earlier by residents in western Virginia to complain against inequitable property taxes in that commonwealth. (ZFC0619) Presidential Debate Washington University at St. Louis October, 2004 (ZFC0619) 37-Star United States Flag Equal Taxation (18671877) The concept of equal taxation was as contentious a national issue in the mid 19th century as it is today. This flag, with a double-ring star pattern and its political inscription, was used to promote either a political position or candidate by associating the Equal Taxation concept with the national flag. The placing of slogans, images and writing on the flag has always been an American custom, as is exemplified by this historic flag and others in the exhibit. |
