13-Star United States Navy Boat Flag No.7
Date: 1891 Media: Wool bunting with cotton stars; hand-sewn Comment: During the last three decades of the 19th century and through 1916, the boat flags made by or for the United States Navy bore 13 stars arranged in a staggered pattern of five horizontal rows of 3-2-3-2-3. The 1882 Navy regulations provided for three sizes of boat flags, the No. 6, the No. 7, and the No. 8, which respectively measured on the fly 80", 66", and 54". The heading of this flag is stenciled with the size marking U.S. Ensign No. 7. In addition the heading indicates that the flag was made at the Navy Yard N.Y. in Brooklyn in April 1891. For the last 25 years of their production, the headings of U.S. Navy boat flags would incorporate these manufacturing datato the great aid of future flag historians. Provenance: Acquired by the Zaricor Flag Collection (ZFC0683) in 2002 from the Mastai Flag Collection through auction at Sothebys of New York City.
