Exhibition Copy | Presidential Debate Washington University at St. Louis October, 2004 (ZFC0688) 39-Star United States Flag The Flag That Never Was (1875-1888; Unofficial) Americans have always thought of the American flag as belonging to the people rather than to the government. This homemade flag was fabricated in the 1880s by someone who assumed that the Dakota Territory would be admitted to the Union as a single state. However, the territory was split, and two states were admitted simultaneously. Therefore, the U.S. Government never officially sanctioned 39-star flags. |
