88. International Treasures - Flags of France



French flags have ranged from the resplendent to the ragged - elegant Fleur-de-lis of the monarchy to the tricolor of the French Revolution. A flag which has inspired tri-band flags the world over. Presented in this Grouping are a selection of French National Flags as well as commemorative pennants from perhaps the most storied military units in the world, the L�©gion �©trang�¨re - the French Foreign Legion & a French souvenir ribbon from the 1893 Chicago Columbian Exposition.

The traditional tricolor of France is recognized and included in this Grouping is a French used by the intrepid explorer and adventurer Capt. Paul Boynton. A 19th century inventor and promoter who used this flag before presenting it to the de Young Museum in San Francisco.
