The General Robert Lawrence Eichelberger Grouping contains his personal flags, other items and paperwork acquired from the general'Ã?Â?Ã?Â?s estate. His career spanned decades, commencing with hid 1906 graduation from the United States Military Academy at West Point.
He then saw service in Panama and along the Mexican Border until joining the American Expeditionary Force Siberia. After the First World War has served in a variety of staff positions until being promoted to Brigadier General and becoming the Superintendent at West Point in 1940.
His most notable service came during WWII, where he served under General of the Army Douglas MacArthur in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater, commanding successively the 77th Infantry Division and the I Corps and ultimately the 8th U.S. Army.
In the United States Army the flags issued to general officers become their personal property and are retained upon retirement. The flags in this Grouping include General Eichelberger's flags while we was a full General commanding the 8th Army in the last days of WWII and during the Occupation of Japan; his m-1902 dress sword and copies of his service records. The garrison cap and name-tag are form his tenure in the grade of lieutenant general.
