After the Union victory in the American Civil War, the flag of the defeated Confederate States of America is no longer represented by an erstwhile nation, and it soon fell into disuse.
After the end of the Reconstruction Era (1865-1877) and with the formation of the United Confederate Veterans and the United Daughters of the Confederacy, the Confederate flag went through an exciting rebirth.
Now touted as the symbol of the "Lost Cause", it could be seen widely throughout the south and it was used by many southerners as a symbol of heritage. However, it also came to be widely displayed by pro-segregation elements in the south and many became exclusively a symbol of racism. At the same time, others have come to identify the Confederate flag, with Rock-a-Billy music and with NASCAR racing.
Whether it symbolized heritage or hate, music or sport, it is still a hotly debated subject and it remains a symbol both for iconic and controversial reasons.
