The Philippine Insurrection or the Philippine-American War was an armed conflict fought between the United States and the self-styled First Philippine Republic. The conflict resulted from the struggle of the First Philippine Republic to gain independence after annexation by the United States. The war was one of a chain of conflicts in the Philippine struggle for independence.
The war was actively fought between 1899 and 1902; yet guerrilla activity would continue until 1913. It started in the aftermath of the Spanish-American War. The Filipino forces had originally fought alongside American troops against the Spanish colonial forces, but turned against the Americans when the full independence, which had been expected, was not forthcoming.
This Grouping's leading flags are the stand of colors of the 21st United States Infantry, the principle regiment involved in the defense of Manila and the suppression of Filipino guerilla forces on various islands during the conflict. The regimental color is worn and damaged from hard service the Philippines. Following is the guidon troop F of the 11th Volunteer Calvary, the escort of Major General Henry Ware Lawton, the highest ranking and only general officer to be killed in action during the Philippine Insurrection.
The Grouping also presents variant Filipino and Moro Insurrectos flags captured by American forces as well as several 46 star flags appropriate to the period. The ephemera includes two period magazines with illustrations and accounts of the death of General Lawton and a rare, early Philippine Commonwealth flag from the 1919 - 1941 period which was modeled on the flags previously carried during the Philippine Insurrection.
