12. General Philip Sheridan & U.S. Mounted Troops

Contained herein are two flags from the Union's ablest cavalry general, Major General Phillip H. Sheridan, who personally designed the his guidon in the spring of 1864. This distinctive red over white personal command battle guidon and an accompanying U.S. 35-star national headquarters standard were gifted personally by General Sheridan to his long-time military aide and clerk, Daniel Drennan in 1871.

It was Sheridan's leadership and performance that changed the United States Mounted Troops forever, who now for the first time were organized and utilized as a separate combat arm. In 1885 he restored the red over white guidons used by the U.S. Cavalry that are still used in the present day.

After the American Civil War, General Sheridan had a distinguished career in the U.S. Army, being elevated to Lieutenant General in 1869 and ultimately rising to the office of Commanding General of the Army of the United States in 1883. He replaced another Civil War luminary, General William Tecumseh Sherman.

Significantly, both of the flags Sheridan flags in this Grouping clearly bear the deleterious effects of the long and hard service these flags endured during the 1864-1865 Shenandoah Valley Campaign. Both flags were painstakingly conserved after acquisition.

Also included here are romanticized prints of Gen. Sheridan and his personal guidon, as well as numerous 19th century red over white U.S. cavalry guidons and an example of an arsenal made cavalry standard from the turn of the 20th century.

Rounding out the Grouping are photograph and ephemera pertaining to the U.S. cavalry.
