44. U.S. Civilian Flags & Ephemera

Morale on the American home front was critical to Allied success during the Second World War. This took many forms and many of the effort to create and increase moral utilized flags and flag related ephemera. Presented are an Army-Navy â??Eâ? Award Pennant created during the war for meeting and exceeding increased production goals; a U.S. Treasury â??Minutemanâ? Bond Flag; U.S. flags made for the Merchant Marine as well as a Maritime Commission flag.

Significant in this Grouping is a U.S. Disabled American Veterans Color. It is of special interest as it is from San Franciscoâ??s Chinatown Chapter. Chinese-Americans were eager to serve their adopted country and over 13,000 served in the U.S. Armed Forces.

The related artifacts in this Grouping include war bond drive posters; over 100 U.S. patriotic postal covers;?  a sampling of the U.S. Treasury's steel wartime coinage; a poignantly tragic summons to report for registration for a Japanese-American from Hawaii; a welcome home banner and an Army Air Force themed quilt made fro an airmen serving in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater.

Testifying the longevity of Joe Rosenthalâ??s Iwo Jima flag raising photograph is a copy presented on the 38th anniversary of the event.
