The term "Flag Officer" refers to elected, appointed or commissioned officers, civilian in the United States Military Establishment who have risen high enough in grade to have their physical presence marked by a personal flag. Usually used in conjunction with their command or agency, these flags identify both the service and the rank or grade of the individual.
They originated during the American Revolutionary war but then sadly fell into disuse, only to be revived again during the American Civil War. The U.S. Navy's flags evolved during this conflict and were codified in 1866. The U.S. Army's flag system was codified in 1903. Other branches of the U.S. military & civilian government closely mimic these two services.
Today these flags are generally used for ceremonial purposes or to decorate the offices of these individuals. The colors of these flags varied depending on the rank of the individual as well as the service that they provided.
